How to evaluate European building energy management software
Before you shortlist, run every vendor through the same four questions.
Where does the data actually live? Ask for the specific region or data center, not just that they comply with GDPR. Compliance and residency are two different things.

Do you need a dedicated platform, or will spreadsheets and your BMS’s dashboard do?
For a single building on one BMS, the vendor’s own dashboard plus a spreadsheet for utility bills is often enough; you don’t need third-party software to read one system. What makes a building energy management platform “European”?
Three things in combination: EU headquarters, EU-based data hosting with a published residency commitment, and design built around EU or national compliance frameworks like GDPR, ISO 50001, and country-specific rules such as Germany’s EnEFG. A vendor can tick one or two of these and still not be EU-native: Siemens and Schneider are European companies but don’t always publish a specific residency guarantee, while a vendor like EnergyCAP is US-headquartered end to end.
Is GDPR compliance the same as EU data residency?
No. GDPR compliance means a vendor follows the regulation’s rules wherever the data is processed, including transfers outside the EU under approved mechanisms. EU data residency means the data physically stays within EU or EEA data centers. A vendor can be GDPR-compliant without offering residency, so ask directly which one you’re getting if it matters to your legal team.
Does ISO 50001 certification of the software company matter, or just my own certification?
Your building’s own ISO 50001 certification is what an auditor checks; the software is a tool, not the certified entity.
